There’s nothing like cozying up and relaxing at home after a long work-week. But not when it’s a long winter night...and you don’t have heat. Here are the 3 easy steps to relight your pilot light. First, locate the instructions on the furnace itself, check where the pilot light is and turn it off, hold down the reset button and relight the pilot.

If you notice that your furnace isn’t heating your home, it could simply be that your pilot light is out (which can happen more frequently than you think). Below we expound on these 3 steps to relight your pilot light.

3 Steps on How to Light a Pilot Light

1. Use Instructions Label on Your Furnace

There should be a label printed on your furnace with instructions, but it could be difficult to read. If so, look up your furnace model and number and read the instructions that way.

2. Switch Pilot Light to "Off"

There will either be a“Pilot,” “On,” or “Off” button near the bottom of your furnace. Locate the switch and turn it all the way to the off position. Wait at least five minutes, as this allows the gas to dissipate and helps to avoid any potential fires.

3. Relight the Pilot Light

Once your gas dissipates, turn the knob to “Pilot.” Next, you'll want to hold down the “Reset” button and bring a lighter flame to the pilot opening, do this while still holding the reset button.

Once the pilot light is back on, release your pressure on the reset button.
