Preventive AC Maintenance & Tune Ups

You can avoid unnecessary AC repairs simply by ensuring that your air conditioner is regularly maintained. We recommend that you schedule an AC maintenance service at least once per year in the spring (they key is to have it serviced before it starts getting too hot outside). During your AC maintenance appointment, one of our experienced technicians will thoroughly inspect your air conditioner, perform any needed adjustments, and clean any dirty parts. If we discover any potential problems during the tune up, we'll inform you of your options.

AC Replacements & New Installations

Having problems with your air conditioning unit that an AC repair won't solve? Is it time for a new one? If you are in the market for a new air conditioning system, here are a few tips to help you find the right one for your home.

  • Size is important, so make sure you get the correct size for your home. If your system is not the right size, you are going to have problems. For example, if the unit is too big, it may cool your house quickly, but it won’t operate long enough to take the moisture out of the air. As a result, you may feel cooler, but still kind of sticky or sweaty. So, you turn down the temperature even more, which causes you to use more energy and money. Also, if moisture is not removed from the air, it can lead to the formation of mold and other kinds of moisture-related damage.
To determine the right size, the load of the home has to be calculated – this is figuring out how much cooling capacity the unit must have in order to cool the home properly so that everyone is comfortable. Naturally, the size of the house is important in determining the load. But there are other considerations as well, factors such as what the house is made of; how it is situated toward the sun; the type of insulation; and the number, size and placement of rooms, doors and windows. There are mathematical formulas that factor in all of these things, and they are now computerized.
  • Check energy efficiency. Air conditioning is an energy hog, and energy is expensive. So, you want a unit that is as efficient as possible. To help you out, the U.S. Department of Energy established minimum efficiency standards for air conditioners. Each AC unit has a rating, called a SEER, for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. It is stamped on each unit. The higher the number, the more efficient the unit is, and the less it will cost to do its job of cooling. The most efficient units have a SEER around 15 to 17.
  • Check warranties. Before you buy any air conditioning unit, read its warranty thoroughly. Make sure you understand the terms and restrictions. Warranties can differ widely depending on the manufacturer. The warranty might cover most of the unit or give you different kinds of coverage for the different parts of the unit.
  • Check the contractor. Most of the brands on the market today are similar – they are all very good. What will make the difference in how your unit operates is the contractor you hire to install it. Air conditioning systems are not like LEGOs. You don’t just snap the pieces together. It takes a lot of time and training to know how to do it right, to calibrate the system properly. The contractor usually also figures the load of the house, so you want to make sure you have someone who knows what they are doing.
