Not only do chemical house cleaners have a strong smell, but they can also harm your appliances and be hazardous to your health. According to the American Lung Association, some household products release dangerous chemicals, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These chemicals can cause headaches and other health concerns such as irritated eyes and throats.

The best way to avoid feeling the negative side effects of cleaning with chemical products is to clean your home the green way. Cleaning your home with lemon juice will not only help disinfect your surfaces but will leave your home smelling fresh and vibrant!

Cleaning Your Home With Lemon Juice

When cleaning with lemon juice, you should always remember to rinse your surfaces with warm, soapy water and dry with a clean cloth afterward. Here is a list of the items that can benefit from using a bit of lemon juice:

Discolored Copper or Brass

Test a small spot with a half lemon and salt. Be sure to use extra caution with antiques. (Note: do NOT use lemon on brass plated surfaces, as it will damage the item).

Remove Odors From Your Refrigerator and Microwave

You can give your kitchen a breath of fresh air by adding half a lemon on a saucer in your refrigerator. Change this out every week.

To clean your microwave, place a cup ¾ of the way full of water with a couple of tablespoons of lemon juice in the microwave. Start your microwave and heat to boiling. Don’t open the door for about 10 minutes to allow your appliance to get good steam. Wipe away any food particles leftover with a clean cloth and dry.

Chrome Faucets

Shining your faucets can make your bathroom, laundry room, and kitchen look crisp and clean. Lemon and salt is a great mixture to restore your faucet to new. Be sure to wipe the mixture off with warm water once you’re done.

Sanitize Your Garbage Disposal

A lot of debris can get caught inside your garbage disposal. Give it a good cleaning every once in a while by pouring a mix of hot water and ½ cup of lemon juice down the drain. Let the mixture sit, and then run your disposal to ensure it’s completely sanitized. No more leftover smell!

Because lemon juice is an organic cleaner, using it can help improve your home's indoor air quality. Your home will be sanitized, clean, and bright in no time!
